Frequently Asked Questions
General
Will GatewayDefender work with our existing mail system?
Yes! No matter what email platform you use, GatewayDefender is 100% compatible!
How often are virus libraries updated?
Libraries are instantaneously updated. Our systems are constantly updated as soon as viruses are detected.
Does GatewayDefender store our messaged - how is confidentiality assured?
Messages that are quarantined are stored for your mail administrator to review. Typically, the administrator will just delete the files (since the sender is automatically notified to re-send a clean message or attachment). However, the administrator may elect to forward the cleaned message; therefore, they are stored in your secure area for action. GatewayDefender also adheres to a strict privacy policy, so your messages are never compromised.
Technical
What occurs when GatewayDefender detects a virus-infected email?
An email that is detected with a virus is immediately stopped and destroyed. An email notification detailing the incident is then sent to the intended recipient.
Infected Messages are destroyed (rather than quarantined) to prevent accidental release to the recipients inbox.
How long does GatewayDefender take to scan a message?
It could only take a maximum of 2 seconds to scan a single message. In most cases, it is under 1 second.
How long will GatewayDefender hold my mail if my mail server is down?
If your mail server is down, GatewayDefender will continue to store your mail for as long as three days. After this period, the mail will be returned to the sender unless you have contacted engineering to arrange other means of delivery or queue.
During this period GatewayDefender will attempt to send your mail every hour; so, you will receive email shortly after your mail server is restored.
What is the hardware architecture for GatewayDefender?
Each email will be sent to a minimum of two Local-Director Load Balanced GatewayDefender servers. Emails once screened are forwarded to Local-Director Load Balanced email relay boxes and then sent to their destination. Thus, the service provides for a multi-tiered architecture for scanning with minimal lead-time.
What changes do I have to make to my system(s) to use GatewayDefender?
Your domain administrator will make a single change to your DNS record. This will allow for all of your domain email to be routed through the GatewayDefender scanners.
GatewayDefender does not require any hardware or software, nor does it require changes to any hardware configurations or firewalls.
